Sports Briefs: Spring 2018

Field Hockey

The field hockey team placed a school-record 19 players on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad. Hopkins was also honored with the NFHCA Academic Team Award.

Volleyball

The Johns Hopkins volleyball team won its fifth Centennial Conference title by beating Swarthmore 3 to 1.

Track and Field

Track and field Head Coach Bobby Van Allen (top right) was named the Mideast Region Women’s Coach of the Year while Assistant Coach Alex Jebb was named the men’s and women’s Mideast Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association.

Women’s Cross Country

The women’s cross country team won its 10th straight NCAA Mideast Regional and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, as the Blue Jays defeated second-place Elizabethtown by 68 points. JHU placed four runners in the top-10 as all seven Blue Jays finished in the top-25 to earn All-Region.

In Memoriam

Nancy Funk, who retired last year after 31 seasons as head coach of the women’s basketball team, died February 6 after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 66. Funk came to Johns Hopkins in 1986, and over the next three decades, she led the Blue Jays to 537 victories, 26 winning seasons, four Centennial Conference Championships, and 10 NCAA tournament appearances.

Football

Three members of the football team have been named to the 2017 Division III CoSIDA Academic All-America Football Team. Senior center Ben Gaal was named to the first team, while junior wide receiver Luke McFadden and junior defensive lineman Anthony Davison were named to the second team.
